Story Overview
Mage & Demon Queen is a hilarious romance story about:
– A fantasy world set in a role-playing game (RPG) concept where human adventurers level up and seek to defeat demons
– Genius mage Malori challenging the demon queen Velverosa in a bid to save humankind
– Malori’s true aim is to save Velverosa from being killed by others because she wants her as her wife
Key Themes
Real life RPG concept: Magical and physical powers, adventurers and demons, potions and revivals, all these are plentiful in this story. Luckily revivals exist, so Malori can work hard to understand Queen Velverosa’s patterns (attacks that one-hit her) by challenging her regularly. She’s confident of defeating her and winning her hand in marriage one day!
Troubles between different races: Malori is acutely aware that the demon race is cast as the baddies in their world where humans and demons have not co-exist peacefully. Animosity grows with huge rewards of fame and fortune for defeating the demon queen, and that fuels Malori to use her overpowered genius self and be the one to end it all.
It totally helps that she’s super into Queen Velverosa though that’s a secret from everyone except her best friend Cerik who often gets roped into her schemes. She also befriends the other demon generals who became supportive of this human girlfriend-to-be, and has suspicions of an ulterior motive to this one-sided animosity.
Age gap struggles: Queen Velverosa vehemently rejects Malori’s constant confessions due to them being of different races and also of their huge age gap. While she is slowly being won over by Malori’s actions and affections, she worries about the kind of future that lies ahead of them. She’s a queen after all, planning ahead for future generations is second nature to her.
Personal Review
I am a huge fan of this story because I play RPG games! The inter-racial romance of an expressive younger Malori pursuing the mighty and powerful Queen Velverosa definitely checks my boxes!
There are endless squeal worthy moments from the side characters too. Be it the demon generals helping Malori and teasing their queen, a general writing novels about the imagined love scenes between Malori and Queen Velverosa, and many more moments keep the story light-hearted.
Plot points ranging from love rivals, other adventurers with their own motives, questioning the truths of the world also drive the story and keep it interesting and exciting.
Romantic-at-heart folks will not be disappointed as Malori did get rewarded with lovely-dovey and spicy moments with her beloved Velverosa, much to the delight of everyone rooting for them. The aftermath of some moments did generate overtime work for some though.
Final Thought
This romcom fantasy yuri is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys the fantasy world, especially those who’s a fan of playing fantasy games in another world. Funny, sweet and touching moments definitely outweigh the sad moments, and I appreciate that even side characters get well thought out endings.
If you ever thought of romancing that super hot and powerful final boss who can definitely kill you, well you can get a taste of that through this cute couple in Mage & Demon Queen!
My Rating: 10/10 highly recommended!
Was there a final boss that got you questioning if you really needed to kill her?
